Which banner material is right for your application? What’s best for indoor and outdoor environments? And what’s the difference between the numerous banner materials and finishes? Allow us to explain…

What do you want from your banner? Size? Strength? A long-lasting resilience that means images keep packing a powerful punch, no matter what the conditions? Achieving it is all about choosing the right banner material types for the application and choosing the right finish.

Here’s how to do that.

Why choose a laminate banner?

The protective film layer(s) overlaid on the polyester substrate ensure your banner is robust and protects against the effects of UV, but durability is far from the only benefit here.

It enhances the appearance, adding a prestige feel that’s effective on outdoor and indoor banner materials. It’s easy to clean. It’s hard to scratch. And it’s a great option as frontlit banner material.

Other options may offer greater tear resistance, but for shorter term projects, few options deliver greater visual bang for your advertising buck.

Why choose a rip-stop banner?

Whatever the material, banners from Soyang deliver robust performance. Inevitably though, some printable banner materials are more robust than others, delivering greater tear and rip resistance.

A rip-stop banner answers a slightly different question, though. Because tear resistance is one thing. But what happens when a banner has already started to rip? Typically, a banner tear is the start of a one-way process that will only ever lead to a bigger and bigger tear.

A rip-stop banner changes the rules. It uses a polyester weave as part of the banner construction. When the banner starts to tear, the weave is pulled together, making it stronger at the rip point, not weaker.

It’s virtually impossible to rip by hand (making it a tougher target for vandals). But it’s also much harder for weather-based tears to develop, meaning that your banner gets to keep delivering its message for longer.

Why choose a semi-coated banner?

There’s a textured softness about a semi-coated banner that belies its strength. Unlike lamination, the coating is applied not as a top and bottom layer, but as an integral part of the polyester substrate. Tightly bonded to one side of the weave, the result is a strong, durable and highly tear-resistant material for a banner destined for long term use on billboards and buildings.

The white, opaque substrate makes this an excellent frontlit banner material too.

Why choose a knife-coated banner?

Perhaps the most durable and shear/tear resistant of banner materials, knife coating envelops the polyester banner in PVC, then ensures a consistent coating thickness by applying a blade.

Knife coating is the ideal option when your banner needs to last years, perhaps when wrapping a major building renovation or on a billboard intended for long term use.
